L’Etage

It took a three-way Story-Off to determine the winner of last night’s StorySlam at L’Etage. The night’s predetermined theme was “Whoppers” but the audience quickly chose the theme of “Smells” and our storytellers had a mere two minutes to make up the judges’ minds during the Story-Off.

Tremaine Johnson walked away as the overall winner but his story-off opponent Natala Covert won the audience vote. Check out both of their original “Whopper” stories and their story-off “Smells” stories and judge for yourself.

Our audiences love Robin Wachsberger. First she won Audience Favorite at our January Slam at World Cafe Live and then she won AF at this week’s Slam at L’Etage. Thanks for coming back Robin!

Maybe Victor will sing karaoke for us too.

Maybe Victor will sing karaoke for us too.

It’s clear from earlier blog posts that I adore Katonya Mosley and Victor Fiorillo is a man I finally get to meet after seeing him around town for years. (He tickles the ivories for Ms. Martha Graham Cracker when he’s not writing for Philly Mag. I also hear that he’s sassy.) So I am particularly excited to see them as guest storyteller and host, respectively, at tonight’s StorySlam. The theme is Gifts.

L’Etage, doors at 7:30, Slam starts at 8:30. $10, $8 for members.

Speaking of gifts, I’m listening to Miike Snow, a gift from my friend Mike (with one i). It’s totally made my day. Anyone else seeing them at TLA on Thursday?

Slam winner, Alex Kacala

Slam winner, Alex Kacala

So congratulations are definitely in order for Alex Kacala, who claimed Winner and Audience Favorite of last night’s January StorySlam at L’Etage. Kacala? That name sounds familiar… isn’t that YOUR last name, Karina?

Why yes, yes it is. I am super proud to say that Alex – without any rigging or finagling on his big sister’s part – won for his story on the consequences of celebrating Armenian Christmas.

Watch his video on Philebrity.com and the First Person Arts channel on You Tube. Photos from last night are on our Flickr page. All other stories will be posted on YouTube by the end of the week. Thanks to everyone for coming out to L’Etage!

That’s the theme of tonight’s StorySlam at L’Etage… maybe it’ll inspire stories of seemingly mundane daily doings that are actually more meaningful than they seem, or a monthly happening amongst friends will set the stage for some drama, or the nervous but comfortable routines we go through before going on a date or meeting a new person will be shared.

While you ponder on your own personal rituals, let’s have a Flashslam by tonight’s guest judge, Katonya Mosley. This is from last year’s Philly vs. Chicago Slam at the Free Library, with the theme of Mortified.

Our next Slam is February 8th at World Cafe Live. The theme is First Impression. Our host is Mr. Doug Didyoung.

From the June 24th “On the Road” Story Slam. Next StorySlam is Tuesday August 26th at L’Etage. Doors at 7:30 and the Slam begins at 8:30. One of our Artists-in-Residence and Suitcase Puppet Theater teacher Beth Nixon will host! Do Not Miss…
