First Person Arts is rooted in the notion that the simple act of sharing stories expresses our individuality, celebrates our diversity, and forges bonds of community. This compelling idea has brought together artists, audiences, and volunteers from all walks of life who meet on the common ground of real life experience. It has inspired unique programs, like our semimonthly StorySlams, the Salon Series, and our annual First Person Festival of Memoir and Documentary Art. It sustains our national competitions, staffs our courses and workshops, and enables us to undertake one-of-a-kind projects like 2009’s Welcome House.
