I went to the July Grand Slam and it was great. Hilarious stories, stiff competition, and a great pre-party to boot. Volunteer staff was very helpful and friendly, and I left feeling very pleased with the experience and with the knowledge that First Person had just acquired a new fan (me).

Another fun night at the Slam. It was great getting up there even if this time things didn’t work out as I had planned. (Understatement.) Of course now I have a tale for my friends about how allergy medication may be hazardous to your train of thought, especially if you’re trying to tell a story in a public place.

As always, recommend the Slams to anyone looking for a weekday night out. Also planning ahead for the Grand Slam in July. That is going to be good!

After reading my previous comment, I thought perhaps I should add that I am not in any way related to or friends with anyone at World Cafe Live or First Person Arts or WXPN. Also my servers name was Greta. I think she deserves to be singled out for such good service.

I went to my first slam at World Cafe Live last Monday. I thought the stories would be good from watching archive videos on the site and on Youtube but I wasn't sure at all what to expect considering the theme was "Funeral." It turned out to be a nice mix of both comic and serious stories. Most all of them--ten stories--were good to excellent. The winner was very funny, although I thought a couple of other people could have won, too. But since it's a friendly competition I guess that doesn't matter either way a whole lot.

I thought the event was well hosted. They keep the stories pretty much to the five minute time limit and things felt like they were moving along at a good pace. The food and beer were excellent. I had a fair amount of both. And the service could not have been better. Also the room is a great space: nice decor, lighting and seating. I recommend putting this event on your calendar for sooner rather than later.
