Double Shot of StorySlam!

Thanks to our friends over at the Kimmel Center, you now have two chances to StorySlam this month! This Saturday night, as part of the Kimmel's Summer Solstice event, host Madi Distefano kicks it off with a special "Summertime" slam at 10pm in the Rendell Room. (Stick around for her performance of Popsicle's Departure immediately afterwards!) And then the following Tuesday, the regularly scheduled slam "On The Road" gets moving back at L'Etage, hosted by our old friend and "Good Intentions" winner, Kendra Gaeta.

OPTION 1:
What: "Summertime" StorySlam
Who: Hosted by Madi Distefano!
When: June 21st @ 10pm
Where: The Rendell room in the Kimmel Center
How much: $10 for the whole 3pm-til-dawn extravaganza
See what else is going on to plan your evening!

OPTION 2:
What: "On The Road" StorySlam
Who: Hosted by Kendra Gaeta
When: June 24th (Doors at 7:30 and the Slam begins at 8:30)
Where: L'Etage @ 6th and Bainbridge
How much: $5-$10

OPTION 3: Hit 'em both!

June 11th Salon Recap

The First Person Salon series continued last night at the Gershman Y, where three local artists presented provocative works of documentary and memoir. The night’s presentations centered around Philadelphia’s social and physical landscape, and offered stories of individuals from three very different groups finding their place within it.

Filmmaker Ron Kanter screened an excerpt from his recent documentary, New Cops, which follows a class of recruits in the Philadelphia Police Academy through their training process and returns five years later to chronicle their experiences on the job. An impassioned discussion followed the film, which questioned whether young recruits have the skills needed to navigate the socially complex and demanding work of being Philadelphia Police Officers. More information about New Cops, which aired recently on WHYY, can be found here.

Mural artist Donald Gensler discussed the process of creating “Independence Starts Here”, a new mural at Broad and Race Streets. For Gensler, a mural is primarily a way to connect with people, and “Independence Starts Here” is the result of a two-year series of community workshops. The result is a kind of collaborative documentary, representing the stories of individuals who worked with the artist throughout the process. With Gensler was Antonio Cancel, a graphic designer who is depicted in the mural. Together, the two are creating a website to accompany the mural and provide a forum for discussion about issues relating to disability. See more of Gensler's work here.

The evening concluded with bestselling author Lorene Cary, who read a moving essay about her work with children from North Philadelphia’s Church of the Advocate Youth Group. Cary’s personal struggle to reconcile the lack of resources available to these children with her own education at the elite Saint Paul’s School led her to the founding of Art Sanctuary, a nonprofit organization dedicated to bringing African American cultural and educational events to the North Philadelphia community. Cary’s essay is slated to appear in the September issue of O Magazine. Her website is here.

Anonymously mailed secrets scribbled on a homemade postcard may sound overly romantic and cliché, but one look at the PostSecret website is a sobering experience. From humorous messages to devastating confessions, Frank Warren's experiment in community art provides an important insight into contemporary culture's obsession with secrets while also telling compelling, interesting stories. From humorous messages to devastating confessions, Frank Warren's experiment in community art provides an important insight into contemporary culture's obsession with secrets while also telling compelling, interesting stories. Take a look at the PostSecret site and think about what secrets you yourself might have. Whether funny or serious, consider sharing your story about secrets at our next Story Slam—May 27 at 8:30 p.m. at L'etage (6th and Bainbridge Streets).

Dating can be really uncomfortable. Just ask the Most Awkward Boy in the World. Or Justin, who collects his inevitably awkward come-ons at his blog Awkward Things I Say to Girls. From a bad line at the bar to a bad move over nightcaps, the ritual of "going out" presents itself with ample opportunity for embarrassment. Of course, stories of dating awkwardness are only one way of participating in tomorrow's First Person Story Slammiversary, a special story slam event celebrating our first year of first-person storytelling in the city. It's happening at L'etage (6th and Bainbridge Streets), so come out and tell us your best story about "The Awkward Pause." The winning storyteller—as determined by our panel of volunteer judges—will compete in our Grand Slam in November. And everyone who participates will get a prize. It's our Slammiversary!
Make sure you're there on April 22nd when the StorySlams turn one. We'll be dishing out some delicious cake and some budget-friendly drink specials! You don't want to miss this one!

And now, back to SLAMspiration...

There are, for me, two types of awkward pauses. The first is momentarily numbing and subsequently helpful, making for an uncomfortable bonding experience. Robbie at the Flirting Blog describes it in terms of picking up members of the opposite sex. The other type of awkward pause, I think, is the kind that knocks on the door that isn't meant to be open. Jennifer Jeffrey describes an interaction with her mother that left her ruminating on things past and present, simple and complicated. No matter which kind of awkward pause you encounter most often, you should share your story at First Person Arts' upcoming Story Slam! on Tuesday, April 22 at L'etage (6th and Bainbridge Streets). Doors will open at 7:30p and the slam will commence at 8:30p.

SLAMspiration: The Awkward Pause

Let's face it: conversation is tough. Whether it's at the water cooler or at Happy Hour, sometimes we just don't know what to say—and awkward things come out of our mouths. Of course, this has some hilarious potential. Take, for instance, the exchange between this blogger and his neighbor after an intended act of kindness turns into a possible life sentence of involuntary babysitting. Or examine the awkwardness that inevitably occurs when someone disrupts another's personal space.

Do you frequently experience these awkward pauses in your everyday life? If so, be sure to join us for our next Story Slam! on April 22. It's at L'etage (6th and Bainbridge Streets); the doors open at 7:30 p.m. and the slam begins at 8:30. Bring your friends and your best, awkward-est story. See you there!

April 9th Salon Preview: Miss Koco

At the premiere First Person Salon at the Gershman Y, Miss Koco debuted Pieces of Koco, an experiment in "letting go of things" and "collecting stories" along the way. After a lifetime of (sometimes unintentionally) collecting chotchkeys, figures, and other bits and pieces, Miss Koco has decided that it's time to give these pieces a new start: some will be given away, some will be recycled, and all will be cataloged. Miss Koco will return to the First Person salon stage this month to update her audience on the progress of her work—and perhaps bring along a few friends to share their part of the story.
FOUND IN PHILLY: Films and food from far-flung places

Mt. Airy memoirist Lori Tharps just released a book—Kinky Gazpacho: Life, Love & Spain, part travel essay and part love story—that recounts her sojourn from her hometown of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, to the coast of southern Spain, where she would meet her husband. Lori will be reading and signing books in Chestnut Hill on April 10 and at Temple University on April 15.

And unless you've been living under a rock for the last few weeks, you're aware that the seventeenth annual Philadelphia Film Festival is now underway. Documentary pieces helmed by both veteran and up-and-coming local filmmakers are playing at locations throughout the city. Take, for instance, first-time director Katrina Bowen's eye-opening doc Traces of the Trade, which unearths the history of her ancestors, the largest slave traders in the northern United States.
FOUND IN PHILLY: Politics, public schools, and Princeton prizes

Kids say the darndest things; but more often than not, those things are decidedly perceptive. Just ask Zoe Greenberg, a 16-year-old student at Philadelphia's Springside School, whose 11-minute documentary "Enough" features real students discussing and describing real social issues, like wealth, poverty, and class. Conceived and created as part of Greenberg's bat mitzvah project, the documentary asks scores of students—black and white, rich and poor, male and female—questions like "What is poverty?" and "Why are people poor?" For her efforts, the high school junior was awarded the second-annual Princeton Prize for Race Relations. While the doc was screened this weekend during the Philadelphia Jewish Film Festival's Annual New Filmmakers Weekend, you can order a copy by visiting the film's website.

Elsewhere: Philadelphia native Joe Barber will premiere his documentary, Electile Dysfunction, at the 17th annual Philadelphia Film Festival (which begins April 3 and runs through April 15). The film—which features interviews with senators Barack Obama and Arlen Specter as well as former vice-president Al Gore—focuses on how political candidates are commoditized and "sold" to voters. The doc screens on Wednesday, April 9, at the Prince Music Theatre.

Also at the Philly Film Festival: Temple University faculty member Eugene Martin trains his lens on two students from inner-city Philadelphia schools in the Bloodlines Video Diary Project. Following each student through a entire academic year at their respective high school, Martin—who also provided his two student-subjects with cameras to document the moments when the professor's own film crew couldn't be with them—weaves a "moving record"—albeit with a surprisingly "poetic aspect"—of twenty-first century life in Philadelphia's urban core. The film debuts at the International House on April 5 with an additional screening on April 12 at the Black Box at the Prince.
