For Seeing Through Young Eyes, an exhibition by students from five Philadelphia public and charter schools, teens got behind the camera and focused on what it means to grow up in the City of Brotherly Love. A special version of the exhibit at the First Person Festival features the photos of 11th and 12th graders from North Philadelphia’s Nueva Esperanza Academy Charter H.S. Incorporating poems into their photos, these young artists share snapshots of their lives as they come to understand themselves and the world around them.

Seeing Through Young Eyes was developed as part of Learning Through Photography at Moore– an outreach initiative of Moore College of Art & Design that supports Philadelphia’s city-wide goal to improve literacy and arts access for school-age youth.

The full exhibition, on view from May 25 – Sept 10, 2011, was organized by The Galleries at Moore and curated by Elizabeth Gilly and Gabrielle Lavin, Interim Co- Directors of The Galleries at Moore.

Self-portrait by Alissandra Perez-Colon, part of Learning Through Photography at Moore College of Art & Design.
