First Person Arts

If you’re thinking about entering a film in this year’s documentary/photography/memoir competition, you might want to take a look at the films that were submitted last year. Elisabeth Erickson is a Philadelphia writer who devotes her creative efforts to personal essays and memoir.  She sees reality as fodder for stories, and tries to shine light on the darkest parts of daily life.  Her work has a particular focus on family, and rejects the idea that family skeletons ought to be kept in the closet.  Erickson believes that telling stories  – especially taboo ones – can heal people and relationships, and allow us to connect more deeply to ourselves and others. 

 At the July Salon, Erickson will read from her autobiographical essay, “Losing Daddy”, and will discuss the challenging and nuanced process of writing about one’s own family.
