Hogue was recently arrested for felony theft and is now awaiting trial in  Colorado.

Film clips to be screened:

Don't Look Back
Documentary filmaker D.A. Pennebaker's heralded film about Bob Dylan's 1965 Spring tour of England.  His behind the scenes footage combined with concert performances provided an intimate portrait of one of the most influential musicians of the century at his peak, when he was stretching and redefining the boundaries of pop music.

Standing In The Shadows Of Motown
This is the story of the band whose music we've all known like the backs of our hands for the last four decades and incredulously, how we knew nothing about them as people.  Standing In The Shadows Of Motown tells the story of the Funk Brothers, the legendary studio band at Motown from 1959 through 1972.  A tale of obscurity and the toll it takes, the film nevertheless becomes a Cinderella story of survival and eventually triumph as the Funk Brothers finally attain their goal of letting the world know what they did in Berry Gordy's basement studio.  With live performances with guest artists like Joan Osborne, Chaka Kahn, Ben Harper and others.

I Am Trying To Break Your Heart
A bizarre story of how Wilco, a critically acclaimed band reknown for their phenomenal live performances, can record their greatest album to date and then get dropped by their record label (Warner Bros.) within twenty-four hours of delivering it.  The story becomes even more mind-boggling when Nonesuch Records (a subsidiary label of Warner's) buys the album at three times the price and the album Warner's thought to be an inferior unmarketable product  is lauded by Rolling Stone as "album of the year."  Jeff Tweeedy and his bandmates triumph in this tale of artistic struggle versus corporate stupidity.

Just An American Boy
Filmaker Amos Poe's portrait of roots rocker and political activist Steve Earle as we follow his chaotic artistic journey.  Switching gears and stages as the former ex-con and chronic substance abuser alternately performs as a bluegrass and rock artist, the common thread running through his music and life are his outspoken stances on a variety of controversial topics:  the death penalty, the Iraq War, and, what he perceived to be, the over-reaction and harsh penalty imposed on American Taliban John Walker Lindh, which earned Earle the wrath of the American Media.

The Last Waltz
Martin Scorsese's eloquent toast to '60s and '70s rock icon the Band, as he chronicles their last performance as they interact and play their hits with guest stars Eric Clapton, Bob Dyland, Van Morrison, Neil Young, and numerous other rock luminaries.

Buena Vista Social Club
Director Wim Wenders and guitarist Ry Cooder's cinematic labor of love that introduces us to the long-over looked performers of Cuba's Buena Vista Social Club.  In spite of the low budget video camera work, the screen comes alive with the humanity of these vibrant musicians as we travel with them from the crumbling streets of Havana, to New York's Carnegie Hall.  The musical performances are as breathtaking as the life stories are heart-warming and unforgettable.

Gimme Shelter
A harrowing documentary of the Rolling Stones' 1969 tour, with much of the focus on the tragic concert at Altamont.  With 300,000 in attendance, the Hell's Angel's security force beat spectators (killing one of them), while rock God Mick Jagger was rendered powerless as he vainly pleaded for peace from the stage.

 Monterey Pop
1967's Monterey International Pop Festival launched the careers of Jimi Hendrix, The Who, Otis Redding, and Janis Joplin, and spawned a worldwide flurry of other music festivals, including Woodstock, Watkins Glen, and the Isle Of Wight. Shot by D.A. Pennebaker, this award-winning documentary features historic performances by the artists mentioned above, as well as Canned Heat, Simon & Garfunkel, Jefferson Airplane, Ravi Shankar, Country Joe & The Fish, Eric Burdon & the Animals, and more.

Two-day intensive course: Writing Characters from Real Life

Courses and Workshops

Sat April 28th, 10:00 AM - 4:00 AM

Terra Building, UArts
211 South Broad St

April 28 & 29, 10AM-4PM

Transferring a real person onto the page can be tricky business. A live person has a complex emotional history, an intricate mind all her own, and plenty of built in contradictions. So how does a memoir writer create characters that feel real and also do justice to the people they’re based upon?  In this intensive two-day seminar we’ll take a close look at the challenges involved in writing characters from real life – from the use of vivid writing techniques to the ethics of fudging details that shield the innocent. Students are asked to bring a piece of non-fiction writing that focuses on a real person to the first class.  It should be double-spaced and no more than five pages long. A ten week course offered this summer will delve into the other essential elements of memoir writing.

2008, now with more Story Slams than ever before!

First Person Arts Story Slams are a monthly real-life-storytelling competition co-sponsored by L’Etage at 6th & Bainbridge Streets in Philadelphia. Each month’s theme will elicit true tales from the lives of Philly’s storytellers. Who are these local raconteurs? Anyone with a story and a little sense of competition is encouraged to participate. Each month ten names are drawn from the hat, and each contestant is given five minutes on the mic to tell a story and win over the crowd. ‘Judges’ are audience members who score the gutsy performers on a ten-point scale.
